Set-Top Box UI — 10-Foot Interface
Designing the living room experience for beIN's set-top box — a 10-foot UI serving millions of households across MENA with fast channel switching, EPG, and VOD discovery.
Overview
The set-top box (STB) is the primary touchpoint for beIN subscribers — millions of households watch live sports, news, and on-demand content through this device. A full UI overhaul was commissioned to modernise the experience and introduce VOD browsing alongside live TV.
The Challenge
10-foot UI design operates under strict constraints: remote-only navigation, 5m viewing distance, low-resolution safe zones, and broadcast-safe colour ranges. The existing EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) had not been updated in 7 years.
Key Deliverables
- Redesigned EPG with 14-day programme guide
- Home screen with personalised content rails
- VOD browsing with category filtering
- Remote-first navigation system
- Broadcast-safe design system
Technical Constraints
Designs had to work at 1280×720 and 1920×1080 resolutions, avoid pure white (#FFFFFF) and pure black (#000000), maintain 48px minimum focus targets, and render within a 32MB memory budget per screen.
